Our expertise and reputation are deeply intertwined with two pivotal programs: the International Energy Agency's Photovoltaic Power Systems Program (IEA PVPS) and Solar Heating and Cooling Program (IEA SHC). These programs are global hubs, bringing together governments, industries, and experts from over 55 countries to tackle real-world energy challenges.
The IEA SHC, for instance, is the world's largest solar heating and cooling research network, with a rich history dating back to 1977. Similarly, the IEA PVPS coordinates international efforts on photovoltaic deployment, grid integration, and market analysis, producing reports that are global references.
Australia's Vital Role
Australia's participation in these programs is not just symbolic. Moreover, as Australia progresses towards association with Horizon Europe, participation in the PVPS and SHC programs opens doors to deeper research partnerships, enhancing our international research connectivity.
The Uncertain Future
Despite the strategic importance of these programs, Australia's continued participation is uncertain beyond March 2027. The required funding, though modest relative to our energy transition investments, is crucial for maintaining our international influence and collaborative capabilities. Without long-term funding certainty, Australia risks losing access to these vital international collaborations, reducing our impact on future energy strategies, and weakening our global clean energy standing.
Over 40 Australian experts currently contribute to the PVPS and SHC programs, with growing interest from researchers, industry, and government. Uncertainty around future participation not only hampers current collaborations but also limits new Australian involvement in emerging international projects.
Australia has spent decades building its solar energy reputation. Walking away from these foundational programs would be shortsighted, especially as the world looks to countries like Australia for renewable energy leadership. If Australia aims to become a renewable energy superpower, maintaining our seat at the global solar collaboration table is not an option—it's a necessity.
